Calendar July 2002 8-20 July 2002 The second Summer Course in International Humanitarian Law shall take place in San Remo (Italy) from 8 to 18 July and in Geneva (Switzerland) from 19 to 20 July 2002 with the main topics: -Introduction to International Humanitarian Law The language of the Course will be English. The Course will include a study trip to Geneva, with organised visits to the United Nations Office in Geneva, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). At the end of the Course, all participants will be awarded a certificate of participation. The Director of the Course is Dr. Michel Veuthey, Adjunct Professor, Fordham University School of Law, Academic Director, Center for International Health and Cooperation (CIHC), assisted by Patricia Panizzi, International Institute of Humanitarian Law (IIHL). * to promote and disseminate the knowledge of international and regional instruments on the protection of refugees and displaced persons; In order to improve the profile of the course, which should reflect new necessities and demands, the programme does not concentrate only on general subjects of refugee law, but addresses specific topics, chosen among the most current and stimulating ones, such as the detention of asylum seekers and refugees, the 'exclusion clause', agents of persecution, temporary protection, gender-based violence, protection in situations of mass-influx. The profile of the course requires a good selection of participants who are requested to have basic knowledge of refugee law, besides consolidated experience in dealing with practical refugee matters. The exchange of national experience and knowledge is also one of the aims of the course. The course programme includes some introductory lectures on specific topics, given by academics and experts from governments, international organisations and Institutes. The same topics are developed through the discussion of case studies, with participants divided in workshops. A detailed programme is available at the IIHL web site. Level: professional Location: San Remo, Italy and Geneva, Switzerland Participants: The number of participants is limited to 40. Tuition, fee, lodging: The registration fee amounts to 1.300 US$. Please note that, for the time being, no scholarships are available. The fee includes transportation from and to Nice Airport (a shuttle will be organised on Sunday 7 July), hospitality (hotel bed and breakfast accommodation with lunch provided on course days), documentation, the study trip to Geneva (including transportation by bus San Remo-Geneva-San Remo and accommodation in student facilities), and the possibility of using the library of the Institute, its technical facilities and entire documentation during the Course.
